Khuzestan is a cradle of civilization as it’s history dated back to pro-Elamite period, also an outstanding city where multicultural residents from different tribes such as Lurs, Bakhtiaris, native Arabs and Persians live together in harmony. Its remarkable to mention that Khuzestan as result of huge reservoir of oil and gas is the economic heart of Persia.


Chogha Zanbil Ziggurat, which seems to be the first spiritual monument in Iran and the largest Ziggurat on earth, constructed by Elamite civilization around 1200 B.C.

Susa (Shush) Museum, is an incredible gallery of archaeological masterworks from Susa ancient city, unbelievable remains from Elamite civilization and identifying potteries from Persian empires.

Shiraz, The Motherland of Achaemenid

Susa (Shush), one of the dateless residential area which constructed during pro-Elamite period and renovated by Achaemenid emperors as one of their four capitals, then lost its significance in the Sassanid era. The settlement which was the centre of Elamite Civilization consists of three main parts; Royal City, Acropolis and Apadana.

Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, a masterpiece of genius engineering, which is believed by archaeologists to be the greatest ancient industrial complex, built by Darius the Great during the Achaemenid empire. The Purpose of construction such system with chain of canals, mills, bridges, waterfalls, dams, and huge tunnels was to take advantage of water to plant more orchards and better farming during Achaemenians and Sassanians.

How to Get There

By Plain:

There is no international airline flights available close to the province of Khuzestan, so you need to take a flight into one of the international airports, then take a local flight to Khuzestan.

The best option is:

  • Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA)


When to Visit

As an area close to the Persian Gulf with a warm and humid climate, it seems better to visit the city since the middle of February to the end of March, also it would be an amazing offer to experience spring-like climate during autumn and winter since the end of October to the end of December.

How to Visit

Dedicate two days of your trip to Khūzestān province because ancient open-air museums and archaeological sites will be astonishing, also enjoy Arabs culture in terms of their lifestyle especially culinary arts would be interesting.
